현대종교에 많은 선교사들의 자료 요청이 들어오고 있다. 해외에서 사용할 수 있는 영어로 번역된 이단 자료가 필요하다는 것이다. 그래서 현대종교는 매월 한 단체씩 이단단체에 대한 정보를 영어로 번역해 게재하고자 한다. [편집자 주]

예수그리스도후기성도교회(몰몬교)는 그 스스로를 유일한 예수 그리스도의 교회라고 주장한다. 그 이름에서 보여지는 것처럼 몰몬교는 그 시작부터 기독교와 밀접히 관련되어 있었다. 교주인 조셉 스미스 스스로가 몰몬교를 세우기 전에는 독실한 기독교인이었을 뿐만 아니라 몰몬교는 성경 신구약을 모두 그들의 경전으로 받아들이고 있으며, 또한 몰몬경은 성경으로부터 수많은 인용을 하고 있다.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint (Mormon Church) (hereinafter referred to “Mormon Church”) insists by itself that Mormon Church is only church of Jesus Christ. As you may notice from its name, the start of this Mormon Church was deeply related to the Christianity. Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormon Church was a devout Christian before he founded this Mormon Church. Also, Mormon Church uses both Old and New Testaments for its scriptures. Also, Book of Mormon, Mormon Church’s own scripture, contains many quotes from the Holy Bible.

예언자 조셉 스미스

몰몬교 예언자 조셉 스미스는 14세에 1820년대 초반에 일어난 제2차 대각성운동을 통해 깊은 영향을 받게 된다. 스미스는 뉴욕주 맨체스터에서 교파주의의 부정적인 면들을 경험하게 된다. 스미스에 따르면, 그가 어느 교파에 소속되어야 할지를 고민하던 중에 성부와 성자를 만나게 되고, 그분들로부터 모든 교파들은 잘못되었으니 그 어느 교파에도 가입하지 말라는 이야기를 듣게된다.

Joseph Smith, Prophet

Joseph Smith, a prophet of Mormon Church, was significantly influenced by the Second Great Awakening in early 1820, when he was 14. His family moved to Manchester, New York State. In this town, his family went through negative experiences caused by denominationalism. According to Smith’s insistence, he met God and Jesus Christ when he could not make his mind at which denomination he would attend. In his story, God and Jesus Christ told him that all denominations are wrong and he shall not be a part of any of them.

스미스에 따르면, 계속되는 환상을 통해 그는 1827년 9월 22일 몰몬경의 내용이 기록된 금판을 발견하였고, 이것을 번역하여 1830년 3월에 몰몬경을 출판한다. 그리고 1830년 4월 6일 뉴욕주 파이엇(Fayette)에 측근 6명과 함께 몰몬교를 공식적으로 조직한 후, 1831년에는 오하이오주와 미조리주로 그의 교회를 확장해 나아간다. 그리고 1840년 스미스는 일리노이주 나부(Nauvoo)에 몰몬교도들을 위한 아름다운 도시를 건설하였고, 나부는 그 당시 몰몬교의 중심이 된다.

According to Smith’s insistence, he had received many visions and found buried golden plates which contain the contents of present Book of Mormon. He interpreted the contents of the golden plates and published it named Book of Mormon in March 1830. On April 6th, 1830, he officially organized the Mormon Church with his six (6) colleges in Fayette, New York State. And his church spread to Ohio and Missouri. And he founded a city for Mormons at Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1840. At that time, Nauvoo was the center of Mormon Church.

그 후로 스미스와 그가 받았다고 하는 계시들은 몰몬교의 절대적이고 중요한 교리가 되었다. 브리감 영(Brigham Young, 1801~1877)이 스미스가 죽은 후 몰몬교의 새로운 지도자가 되었다. 영은 오하이오주 커크랜드(Kirkland)에서 스미스를 처음 만났고, 몰몬교가 십이사도위원회를 구성했을 때, 스미스에 이어 제2인자의 위치를 차지하게 된다.

Smith insisted that he received visions and these visions have become absolute and important doctrines of Mormon Church. After Mr. Smith’s death, Brigham Young became a new leader of Mormon Church. Mr. Young

first met Mr. Smith in Kirkland, Ohio, and he became No. 2 man, when Mormon Church organized the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, for the first time.

스미스처럼 영도 절대적 영향력을 가진 영적지도자인 동시에 정치지도자였다. 그는 공개적으로 일부다처제를 지지하였다. 하지만 1862년 7월 8일 아브라함 링컨 대통령이 승인한 반일부다처법률(Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act)이 제정된 후, 이로 인해 1863년 스미스는 체포된다. 몰몬교도들을 솔트레이크계곡에 성공적으로 정착하도록 이끈 영은 조셉 스미스의 이름을 부르며 1877년 8월 29일 사망했다.

He was not only a spiritual leader as Joseph Smith, but also a political leader of Mormon Church. He openly supported the bigamy. He was arrested in 1863, since the President Lincoln signed Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act on July 8th, 1862. He successfully led Mormon Church and made Mormon Church to settle in Salt Lake City. Mr. Young died by yelling Joseph Smith’s name, on August 29th, 1877.

몰몬교 주요 교리

몰몬교는 신성시하는 네 개의 경전이 있다: 즉 ‘성경’, ‘몰몬경’, ‘교리와 성약’ 그리고 ‘값진 진주’이다. 이를 근거로 몰몬교는 지상천국의 건설을 주장하고 있다. 몰몬경은 가장 기본이 되는 중요한 교리서로써, 몰몬교에 따르면, 여기에는 기원전 6세기경 예루살렘에서 아메리카로 이주해온 고대인들에 대한 이야기가 기록되어 있는데, 시기적으로 몰몬경은 기원전 600년경부터 기원후 421년까지의 이야기가 기록되어 있다고 믿고 있다.

Main Doctrines of Mormon Church

Mormon Church has four main scriptures: Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrines and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price. Based on these scriptures, Mormon Church insists that they found and will found a heaven on the earth. Book of Mormon is the basic and main scripture of Mormon Church. According to Mormon Church’s insistence, Book of Mormon was written by ancient men who moved from Jerusalem to America, in B.C. 6th Century, and they wrote this book for the period from B.C. 600 to A.D. 421.

몰몬경에 따르면, “이 기록은 많은 고대 위대한 문명을 이룩한 두 민족에 대해 설명하고 있다. 이들 중 한 민족은 기원전 600년에 예루살렘으로부터 왔으며 후에 니파이인과 레이맨인이라고 하는 두 민족으로 나뉘어졌다. 또 다른 민족은 바벨탑을 쌓을 때 즉 주님께서 언어를 혼란시키실 때 떠나온 민족이다. 이 민족은 야렛인으로 알려져 있다. 수천 년이 지난 후 레이맨인을 제외한 모든 민족이 멸망되었으며 이들 레이맨인이 바로 아메리카 인디언의 조상인 것이다. 몰몬경에 기록된 가장 중대한 사건은 주 예수 그리스도 께서 부활하시고 나서 바로 니파이 인들에게 친히 성역을 베푸신 일이다. 몰몬경에는 복음 교리와 구원의 계획이 설명되어 있을 뿐만 아니라 인간이 현세에서 평화를 얻고, 내세

에서 영원한 구원을 얻기 위해 마땅히 행할 일도 설명되어 있다”고 몰몬경 서문에서 설명하고 있다.

According to Book of Mormon, Book of Mormon is the record of two peoples who achieved great civilizations in the ancient time. One of them came from Jerusalem in B.C. 600 and divided into two ethnic groups;Nephites and Rayman. Also, Book of Mormon claims that there were other people named Jared who left Jerusalem when Babel Tower was built and God brought into existence of multiple languages. In accordance to this book, all peoples, except Rayman, were collapsed and Rayman became the ancestor of American Indians. The most important event in Book of Mormon is Jesus Christ’s ministry to the Nephites after his resurrection. In the introduction of Book of Mormon, there is a brief explanation that Book of Mormon will prescribe its doctrines regarding gospel, plan for salvation, and duties and obligations for achieving peace and eternal salvation.

몰몬교는 몰몬경이 예언자이면서 역사가인 몰몬에 의해 금판에 기록 되었다고 믿는다. 몰몬이 기록한 이 금판을 그의 아들 모로나이에게 주었고, 그가 이 금판을 뉴욕주 맨체스터의 커머라 언덕(Hill Cumorah)에 421년에 묻었다는 것이다. 그리고 부활한 모로나이의 도움을 받아 조셉 스미스가 1823년에 이 금판들을 발견했다는 것이다.

Mormon Church believes that Book of Mormon has same contents with the golden plates’ contents written by Mormon, a historian and prophet. They believe that Mormon gave these golden plates to his son Moroni and Moroni buried these plates in Hill Cumorah, Manchester, New York State in A.D. 421. Also, Mormon Church members claim that Joseph Smith found out these plates with support of resurrected Moroni.

무엇보다도 몰몬교는 몰몬경과 함께 ‘살아있는 예언자들(Living Prophets, 몰몬교의 세 명의 최고 지도자들)’을 통한 지속적인 계시를 성경과 동등한 권위로 받아들인다. 몰몬교는 이들 최고지도자들이 스미스의 후계자라고 믿으며, 이들의 지시를 절대적으로 순종한다. 조셉 스미스가 작성했다고 하는 총 13개조로 이루어진 몰몬교의 “신앙개조”는 몰몬교의 교리가 간략히 잘 나타나 있으며, ‘성경과 몰몬경의 동등권위’와 ‘미국대륙으로의 지상천국 건설’ 등 기성교회

와의 현저한 교리적 차이점들이 분명하게 드러나 있다.

Most of all, Mormon Church accepts continuous instructions given by ‘Living Prophets (Mormon Church’s top three leaders)’ as much authoritative as Holy Bible. Mormon Church treats these Living Prophets as successors of Joseph Smith and church members follow their instructions without any objections. “Articles of Faith” which consists of 13 Articles written by Joseph Smith also prescribes Mormon Church’s general doctrines. These Articles claim that ‘Book of Mormon has same authority with Holy Bible’ and Mormon Church will ‘build a heaven on the earth in American Continent’. Theses doctrines and Articles clearly show that Mormon Church’s doctrines are significantly different from traditional churches’.

몰몬교는 가족은 교회와 사회의 기본적인 단위(the basic unit)이며, 그 필요성과 중요성은 모든 것에 우선한다고 믿는다. 또한 모든 인간은 하늘의 부모(heavenly parents)에게서 받은 영(a spirit)을 가지고 있으며, 하나님처럼 되기 위해서 이 땅에 태어나게 되었다고 믿는다. 하지만, 인간의 타락으로 인해 이러한 창조의 계획이 성취되지 못했고, 타

락으로부터 회복되기 위해서 지상천국을 건설해야만 했으며, 그래서 지상에서의 결혼을 통해서만 지상천국이 지상에 건설되어질 수 있다고 믿는다.

Mormon Church believes that a family is the basic unit of church and society and the importance of family prevails over everything. Also, all people receives a spirit from heavenly parents, and at very first, mankind was born to become just like God. However, the fall of mankind interrupted such plan of creation and mankind shall build a heaven on the earth for recovering from such fall. In Mormon Church, marriage on the earth is only way to build the heaven on the earth.

이렇게 이루어진 가족은, 영적인 자녀들(spirit children)을 생산할 수 있고, 이로 인해 가족은 가장 기본적인 사회와 교회의 단위가 된다고 주장한다. 몰몬성전에서만 거행되어야 하는, 이 결혼을 영원한 결혼(Eternal Marriage), 그리고 이를 통해 이루어지는 가족을 영원한 가족(Eternal Family)이라고 부른다.

Under Mormon Church’s doctrine, only families united as instructed by Mormon Church may have birth of spiritual children and these families are basic units of society and church. Eternal family could be organized only by eternal marriage which shall be done in the Mormon Church.

몰몬교 조직

조셉 스미스에 의해서 선포된 교리들은 권위주의적이고 체계적인 몰몬교의 조직을 통해 구체적으로 실행되고 있다. 제일정원회(First Presidency)는 몰몬교의 최고 조직이다. 대관장이라 불리는 예언자와 두 명의 보좌회장이 있고, 그 밑에는 십이사도정원회(Quorums of the Twelve)라고 불리는 십이인의 선지자들이 있다.

Organization and Structure of Mormon Church

Mormon Church is operated in accordance with authoritative and organized groups and system. The First Presidency which consists of Mormon Church’s president and two counselors is the highest group in Mormon

Church. The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the second highest group in the church, is under the First Presidency and it consists of twelve prophets.

제일정원회는 조셉 스미스와 브리감 영처럼 계시를 받으며 교회의 정책을 결정하고 추진한다. 몰몬교에서 제일정원회의 결정은 절대적이며, 대관장은 지상에 유일한 선지자로 숭배된다. 제일정원회의 결정은 그 어떤 질문도 없이 그대로 받아들여 진다. 대관장이 죽으면 두 명의 보좌회장 중 선임회장이 대관장이 된다.

The First Presidency insists that it receives visions just like Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. It decides and makes policies for Mormon Church. Its decision is absolute and may not be objected. The president is only prophet who is worshiped by church members. Any decision made by the First Presidency shall not be objected nor questioned. When the president is dead, one of two counselors will be the next president of church.

십이사도정원회는 1835년 2월 14일 조직된 이래, 제일정원회를 보좌하는 최고행정기구의 역할을 수행해오고 있다. 만약 제일정원회의 회장단이 유고인 경우 십이사도정원회에서 제일정원회를 구성한다. 그 아래로 칠십인정원회(Quorums of the Seventy)가 있으며, 그리고 그 아래에 지역회장단(Area Presidency)이 있다. 칠십인정원회에도 제일정원회처럼 세 명의 회장단이 구성되어 있다.

Ever since its foundation on February 14th, 1835, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles performs the highest administrative roles for Mormon Church ad its closely supports the First Presidency. In case where the First Presidency is not available for any reason, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will organize another First Presidency. The hierarchy of Mormon Church is in following order: the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Quorums of the Seventy, Area Presidency. In the Quorum of the Sev enty, there is also top three leaders.

지역조직으로는 스테이크(Stakes)와 와드(Wards)가 있는데, 스테이크는 미국에서는 일반적으로 약 2000~7000명으로 구성되어 있으며, 각 스테이크는 독자적인 체제로 조직되어 있다. 스테이크는 역시 스테이크회장단(회장과 두 명의 보좌 회장으로 구성)이 있으며, 와드는 약 200~800명으로 구성되며, 감독과 두 명의 보좌감독으로 지도부가 구성되어 있다. 한국에는 2013년 현재 전국에 16개의 스테이크(교구)와 128개의 와드(교회)에 8만 6000여 명의 회원이 있다.

For small areas, there are Stakes and Wards. Stakes generally consists of about 2000 ~ 7000 church members in the United States. Each Stake is an independent organization. A Stake has also Stake Presidency (one president and two counselors). Ward is a group consisting of about 200~800 church members. A Ward has a leader group which has one director and two vice directors. In Korea, there are 16 Stakes and 128 wards of Mormon Church. The number of church members in Korea was about 86000, as of 2013.

세계 여러 나라에 독특한 형태의 몰몬성전들이 건축되고 있고, 한국에는 남산에 그 성전이 있다. 이 성전들이 세워진 나라들은 곧 몰몬교의 선교가 일정한 수준에 이르렀다는 것을 의미하는데, 정치문화적으로 미국의 영향력에 있는 나라들(독일,일본, 필리핀, 한국 등)과 백인중심의 사회(호주, 남아프리카 공화국 등)에서 몰몬교가 성공적으로 정착하고 성장하는 것은, 몰몬교가 ‘미국적’이며 ‘백인중심적’인 면이 있다는 것을 보여주고 있다.

Mormon Church builds unique chapel buildings for their churches in many countries over the world. In Korea, Mormon Church’s chapel is located at Nam San Mountain. This building means that the country at where thechapel building is built has certain number of church members. Mormon Church’s chapels are built in countries where has an political and cultural connection with America (Germany, Japan, Phillipine, Korea and etc.) and countries where the white community has power (Australia, South Africa, etc.). It shows that Mormon Church is originally from United State of America and pursues white community.

저명한 사회학자 잰 쉽(Jan Shipp)을 비롯한 많은 학자들은 몰몬교가 이제 기독교라고 주장하는 것을 넘어서서, 하나의 종교(a religion)로서 그 정체성을 확립해야 한다고 주장하고 있다. 이것은 성장을 근거한 자신감의 표현인 한편, 기독교와의 이단 시비를 벗어나기 위한 시도로 도 볼 수 있다.

Many academic scholars, including Jan Shipp, a famous socialist insist that Mormon Church shall be categorized as a new religion, not a Christianity. This is one of way how Mormon Church tries to escape from

the heresy debates with Christianity. And, of course, it shows off its growth and big influence.

하지만 이런 시도에도 불구하고 (1) 몰몬교의 최고지도조직인 제일정원회의 회장들은 몰몬교가 기독교라고 공식적으로 밝히고 있으며 (2) 또한 몰몬교는 성경을 그들의 경전으로 사용하고 있으며, 그리고 몰몬경은 성경으로부터 셀 수 없는 인용을 하고 있고 (3) 과거의 계시(몰몬경)와 현재의 계시(살아있는 예언자들의 가르침)를 통해 자신들이 기독교라고 밝히고 있으며 (4) 하지만 기독교와는 다른 교리를 신앙하고 실천하고 포교하는 한 몰몬교는 기독교 이단으로 규정될 수밖에 없다.

Despite of such trials, Mormon Church insists followings: (1) All of church leading groups, including the First Presidency, officially claim that Mormon Church is Christianity. (2) Mormon Church uses Holy Bible as its scripture, but also Book of Mormon which has many quotes from Holy Bible; and (3) Mormon Church claims that it is a Christianity based on the Book of Mormon (revelation from the past) and instructions from Living Prophets (revelation from the present). (4) However, Mormon Church’s doctrines are significantly different from traditional churches’. It shall be categorized as a heresy.

물론 몰몬교가 윤리적이며 경건한 종교인 것으로 많이 비춰지는 것이 사실이다. 또한 ‘비윤리적인 기성교회’보다는 ‘윤리적인 이단’을 차라리 선호하는 것이 현재 한국사회의 현실인 것도 사실이며, 그리고 교회의 심오한 교리적 이단 규정이 이루어지는 동안, 교회가 소금과 빛의 역할을 소홀히 함으로 인해 교회에 대한 사회의 부정적 시각은 커져만가고 있는 것도 사실이다. 하지만 이러한 현실이 윤리적으로 엄격하다는 몰몬교를 이단으로 규정하는 걸림돌이 될 수는 없다. 몰몬교가 자신의 정체성을 “유일하고 참된 예수 그리스도의 교회”로서 규정하는 한 몰몬교는 기독교 이단으로 분류될 수밖에 없다.

It is true that Mormon Church is recognized by the public as a holy and ethical religion. In Korea, it is sad, but ethical heresy is preferred to unethical traditional churches. During traditional churches judge heresy churches, traditional churches who caused serious social problems fail to be light and salt in the society. And such failure has made serious criticism against traditional churches and Christianity. However, such failure cannot justify and allow heresies and their doctrines. Mormon Church shall be categorized as a heresy, if it calls itself as only and sole church of Jesus Christ.​
